im sure it would, all you are doing is making a rectangle, and dropping a couple stitches where you want button holes...you could mark the spot with stitch markers, or clothes pins, safety pins, etc, you could probably recycle an old scarf too, just trim it to size, and make button holes, but be careful if it's knit/crochet, you should sew the raw/cut edges to stop running ends and fraying...
