Its not a trick, its one of the basic sleight of hand, and its very useful. Of course on its own its not impressive, but none of the slights are.
As for coin, this an the french drop is my favorite false transfer sleight. The simple pick/put is less convincing. This retention is very visual if done correctly, the retaining hand must look otherwise empty.
